Maintenance FAQ’s
The case of your instrument is solid brass that has been finished with a durable, water-based lacquer. It is in fact a piece of jewelry and should be treated as such. It should be cleaned on a regular basis to keep airborne pollutants (dust, etc.) and any moisture from collecting on the case, thereby degrading the finish. To clean, simply wipe with a soft cloth or soft paper towel with a mild glass cleaner. If your instruments are in a summer home where you cannot clean them regularly, simply lay a small cloth or towel across the top two-thirds so dust can not settle on the finish.
When properly installed, your sensors require virtually no maintenance. If you have a rain collector bucket as part of your set-up, make sure to clean out any debris that may have blown into it over the course of the year. None of the sensors have brushes or wiping contacts and they should all perform for many years in any environment. Sensors installed in salt-air environments may show signs of wear sooner than sensors installed in other settings.
If you are comfortable making minor repairs to your home, then installing a set of weather instruments should not be a challenge. Instruments that require power are supplied with a low-voltage AC adaptor that plugs into a standard wall outlet. Wind instruments will be most accurate when their sensors are installed on a rooftop or some other elevation. If you are comfortable climbing a ladder and/or standing on your roof, you can likely do the job. If you are not comfortable with any of the installation requirements, you should seek the service of a professional to install the instruments in your home.
